Exercise

What can physical activity do for you?

Your fitness program can help you:

  • lower blood glucose levels (sometimes within minutes) because the body uses blood glucose as fuel
  • reverse the “resistance” to insulin that occurs with type 2 diabetes and when someone is overweight
  • lower your risk of heart problems and stroke by improving blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • provide an outlet for stress release
  • help you feel better about yourself
  • improve the strength of your heart, lungs and muscles
  • burn calories to help you lose weight — and keep it off!

Joslin's certified exercise physiologists can help you design an individual exercise plan to match your lifestyle and reach your personal goals. An exercise physiologist is an important member of your diabetes care team.

Physical activity is a primary tool for managing diabetes. Even in the 1920s, Elliott P. Joslin, M.D. (the founder of Joslin Diabetes Center) recommended exercise along with diet and insulin as the ingredients for good diabetes treatment. And today, as the nation's rate of obesity climbs and lifestyles become more sedentary, exercise is more important than ever.
