JDC 385   La Historia de Rosa (Rosa's Story) -- with Provider Manual$26.95
Because Latinos and Hispanic Americans are among the populations with a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the Latino Diabetes Initiative (LDI) at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston has developed a culturally appropriate teaching tool that uses storytelling to educate readers about diabetes.  Rosa’s Story: An Audio-Novella for Latinos with Diabetes, has three components: 3 Spanish audio CD’s, a patient handbook written in Spanish, and a provider manual written in English.  These materials provide important and culturally appropriate diabetes self-management information for Latino and Hispanic people with diabetes, including guidelines on prevention, blood glucose control, nutrition, medication and exercise.

The Provider's Manual offers, in English, an outline for each chapter of the story, talking points and questions to ask, cultural issues raised and specific patient concerns to address.

“Our goal with Rosa’s Story is to educate Latinos and Hispanic Americans, as well as their healthcare providers, about diabetes,” said Enrique Caballero, M.D., Director of Joslin’s Latino Diabetes Initiative.  “The approach that we took to create this audio-novella came about after years of patient care and research, allowing us to identify the most effective way to educate the Latino population about diabetes. The research identified the issues and misconceptions that Latinos and Hispanic Americans with diabetes have about diabetes and addressed these myths through the life and voice of 53-year old woman who is diagnosed with diabetes. Storytelling has played a pivotal role in education throughout the history of Latino and Hispanic cultures, and Rosa’s Story was written in order to better educate these populations, at all levels of literacy."
