Board of Trustees

Solid leadership is critical to the success of a world-class institution like Joslin. 

Joslin's Board of Trustees is made up of local, national and international philanthropic leaders who have a special connection to Joslin and a shared goal of a future without diabetes.

Joslin's Board of Trustees works closely with the Joslin executive staff. Together, executives and volunteers ensure Joslin is grounded on a steady foundation, yet has the freedom to create new knowledge — the hallmark of this one-of-a-kind Center.

Ralph James, Chairperson of the Joslin Board of Trustees is Executive Director of External Relations at Harvard Business School, responsible for development and alumni relations activities for HBS.

Peter S. Amenta, MD, PhD is currently Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  Dr. Amenta received his Bachelor of Science degree from Trinity College in Hartford Connecticut.  At Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and University Hospital (the primary affiliate), over a twenty year span, he served in a number of administrative roles including Chief of the Pathology and Laboratory Service, Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief of Staff at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Chief of Performance Improvement. Michael Astrue is the former Commissioner of Social Security (2007-2013). The Social Security Administration is an independent federal agency headquartered in suburban Baltimore with over 62,000 employees nationwide.  As commissioner, Astrue reported directly to President Obama. [more]

John C. Cook, Jr., Counsel, Seaward Management. John joined Seaward in March 1999 and was a Managing Director through 2013. Prior to this he was President of UAM Investment Services for five years.  [more]

Nathaniel S. Gardiner is Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Enanta Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a Watertown, MA biotechnology company focused primarily on discovering drugs for infectious diseases, including hepatitis C.  Until May 2014 he was a partner at the law firm of Edwards Wildman Palmer LLP (formerly Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge), where he was the co-chair of the Life Sciences Group and served as general counsel to public and private life sciences and technology companies in a wide range of corporate matters. Jim Geraghty is Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Third Rock Ventures. Having helped Genzyme launch rare disease therapies around the world, Jim assists the firm in creating companies focused on rare genetic diseases and supports existing portfolio companies in related spaces. [more]

Roberta Herman M.D. was, until July 2013, was the Chief Operating Officer for Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, one of New England’s largest non-profit managed health care organizations, providing care and coverage to over one million members throughout Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire. [more]

Jessica Hopfield, Ph.D. -Vice Chairperson of the Joslin Board of Trustees -is a former partner of McKinsey & Company in their Global Pharmaceutical practice. While at McKinsey from 1995-2009, Ms. Hopfield served clients across pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device and consumer industries with a focus on strategy formulation, R&D management and marketing. Ann Lagasse is owner of Lagasse Real Estate LLC a real estate development, leasing and management company.   For twenty-five years she and her husband, Chuck, have been instrumental in the revitalization and restoration of the Newburyport historic downtown.  Today their company is developing and managing mixed-use projects throughout NE.  [more]

James Petersen served as CEO of Haemonetics Corporation, and after retirement has worked to bring new technologies into reality to improve the quality of life of people with diabetes.  In the process he was advisor to a private equity group on their diabetes investments, founded an insulin pump company for people with type 1 diabetes, and founded an insulin infusion company for people with type 2 diabetes.  [more]

Geoffrey S. Rehnert is the Co-Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Audax Group, a leading middle market private equity and private debt firm. Prior to founding Audax Group, Mr. Rehnert was a General Partner and Managing Director of Bain Capital, Inc., which he helped to start in 1984.  [more]

Mark E. Russell is Vice President of Engineering, Technology and Mission Assurance for Raytheon Company. He assumed the position in July 2008, and was elected a company officer in June 2008. Russell guides the company’s vision and provides corporate leadership in the strategic areas of technology and research, engineering, operations, performance excellence, programs security, Raytheon Six Sigma™ and Mission Assurance. He is responsible for 45,000 world-class people working on more than 8,000 programs.  [more]

Richard Smith is the Co-Chairman of the Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation. Dick has held a wide range of influential business and civic positions over the course of his career. He was the former Chairman of the Board and CEO of Harcourt General, the Neiman Marcus Group and the GC Companies. He has held directorships at the First National Bank of Boston, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and Wang Laboratories. [more]

John L. Brooks, III, President and CEO, Joslin Diabetes Center, a well-known life sciences executive, was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer in March 2011, having previously served as Chairman of the Joslin Board of Trustees. [more]

Robert A. Gabbay, M.D., Ph.D., FACP, Chief Medical Officer, has over 35 years of clinical and research experience and is Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President at Joslin Diabetes Center. [more]

George King M.D. is the Director of Research and Head of the Section on Vascular Cell Biology at Joslin, as well as a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. [more]

Honorary Trustees


Charles Hood is the President of Charles H. Hood Foundation. His grandfather founded H.P.Hood & Sons and his father was the former CEO and President. During his tenure on the Joslin Board, he served as Vice Chair, an Incorporator, Treasurer and on various Trustee committees. [more]

Patrick O'Neill has served as senior executive for numerous mining companies located throughout the world. In 1982, he became an independent mining consultant until his retirement in 2005. Patrick has served on numerous civic and professional organizations. During his tenure at Joslin, he served as Board Chair and Chair of the Committee overseeing the construction of the Howard F. Root wing of Joslin. [more]

Ken Quickel, M.D. is President Emeritus of the Joslin Diabetes Center. He served as CEO from 1987-2000 and again from 2008-2010. He was a staff physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a lecturer at Harvard Medical School, a trustee of both Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and CareGroup and an Overseer of Brigham & Women’s Hospital.
