Mollie and Michael Talmanson: A Favor for Joslin

When Mollie and Michael Talmanson were deciding on wedding favors, they knew they wanted something different and significant. Instead of chocolate or candy-coated almonds, they made a donation to Joslin Diabetes Center.

“We thought it would be a small way to help,” explains Mollie. The couple explored the idea after attending a wedding at which the bride and groom had done something similar. So when planning their fall 2002 wedding, Mollie and Michael decided to skip the traditional, edible wedding favors, and instead, the couple and their parents made a donation to a place that had special meaning to them. They chose Joslin.

Mollie, a Joslin patient, and Michael, have had a “very positive experience” at Joslin. They have been deeply touched by Mollie’s care team, including Roberta Capelson, ANP, Dr. Ann Goebel-Fabbri, and her physician, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Patti. “It is no exaggeration when I say that Dr. Patti has changed Mollie’s life in a big way,” says Michael.

In appreciation of the outstanding care Dr. Patti has provided for Mollie, the couple chose to specify their donation in support of Dr. Patti’s research. Mollie explains, “Everyone at Joslin has been so helpful, but Dr. Patti continually goes above and beyond for me.”

Once the couple made the decision to make a donation in lieu of wedding favors, “it was really a very easy process,” says Mollie. It involved just a few calls to Joslin’s Development Office explaining what the couple wanted to do.

Then, using some heavy card stock and ribbon matching the bridesmaids’ dresses, Mollie and Michael made notes explaining their donation to Joslin. The philanthropic favor was placed at each table setting at their November wedding. “Guests thought it was really nice,” says Mollie.

In addition to their wedding, the couple hopes the day marks the beginning of more fundraising on behalf of Dr. Patti and Joslin.

“It’s powerful to see the effect Dr. Patti and Joslin has had on Mollie and me,” says Michael. “We were happy to make the donation to Joslin in lieu of wedding favors, and we’re hoping to become more involved in fundraising activities for Joslin.”
