Joslin Vision Network (JVN)

The Joslin Vision NetworkTM Diabetes Eye Care Program (JVN) is a validated retinal imaging and clinical service designed to prevent blindness and vision loss for people with diabetes.  The JVN has the potential to expand access to proven diabetes eye care, offer alternative means to receive such care, integrate eye care with routine and specialized medical visits, and offer focused education on diabetes eye care.

The JVN allows patient evaluation for diabetic eye disease within their primary care physician's, endocrinologist's, ophthalmologist's or other medical office.  JVN images, along with other key patient data, including blood pressure and A1C scores (the average blood glucose measurement during the two to three months before the date the A1C test was taken), are electronically transmitted securely to the JVN Reading and Evaluation Center at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

At Joslin the images are evaluated by an expert team of ophthalmologists, optometrists and clinical staff. They interpret images, identify specific levels of diabetic retinopathy and provide appropriate treatment guidance for each patient. The Joslin team also identifies ocular pathologies other than diabetic retinopathy if observed.

By reducing barriers to eye care, JVN increases the rate of ongoing disease surveillance and facilitates appropriate and timely referral of patients to eye care specialists when needed.

Diabetes is the leading cause of new-onset blindness in working age adults across industrialized countries, yet millions of patients do not receive the regular, recommended eye care they require.  Lack of ready access to eye care specialists, the need for pupil dilation and the frequent lack of symptoms when retinopathy is initially present are among the factors contributing to poor rates of annual eye examination for people with diabetes. With early detection and appropriate treatment, vision loss can be prevented.

The JVN offers patients with diabetes:

  • A nonmydriatic (non-dilated) diabetic eye evaluation that has been validated against dilated eye exams by retinal specialists and the gold standard of imaging, 35 mm stereo slides.
  • Digital retinal imaging and clinical diabetes eye care provided by diabetes eye care clinicians evaluating for diabetic retinopathy and more.
  • Results and care recommendations from the world-renowned Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston within 48 hours.
