Joslin has announced an affiliation with AtlantiCare, a regional healthcare organization based in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place today for the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at AtlantiCare, which will offer the latest advances for treating diabetes and its complications as well as patient education and support services.

Clinical studies of a generic drug called salsalate, widely prescribed for arthritis, now provide promising early results that the drug may be useful for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes as well. In a three-month trial led by Joslin Diabetes Center researchers, those who took salsalate showed significantly improved blood glucose levels.

Paolo Antonio S. Silva, M.D., is staff ophthalmologist and assistant chief of the Center for Ocular Telehealth at Joslin’s Beetham Eye Institute. He holds an affiliate appointment as an associate surgeon at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and is an investigator in the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network.

Recent studies suggest that bariatric surgery (which promotes weight loss by restricting the body’s ability to take in and process nutrients) may lead to impressive resolutions or even cures for many with type 2 diabetes. During the past decade there also have been many advances with new medications and innovative programs for intensive medical diabetes and weight management programs. Joslin and Brigham and Women’s Hospital are joining forces for a clinical trial, now recruiting volunteers in greater Boston, which will compare these two types of treatment.

A collaboration between scientists at Joslin and the Gladstone Institute (GI) has discovered a novel potential therapeutic target for controlling fat metabolism. The target is a protein from the mitochondria, or the “power plants” of every cell, which process oxygen and convert substances from the foods we eat into energy for essential cell functions.

Last fall, Joslin’s Lloyd M. Aiello, M.D., was awarded the 2009 Warren Alpert Foundation Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in biomedicine. In December, he and his wife, Nancy Jane Beetham Aiello, presented Joslin with $100,000 from the Alpert prize money to aid with initial infrastructure for the Beetham Eye Institute Center for Global Diabetes Eye Health.
