BOSTON, Mass. – March 23, 2010 – Joslin Diabetes Center, the world’s preeminent diabetes research and clinical care organization, has announced an affiliation with AtlantiCare, a regional healthcare organization based in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.

The Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at AtlantiCare will offer the latest advances for treating diabetes and its complications as well as patient education and support services. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new center will take place on the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Diabetes Alert DaySM, March 23, at 5:30 p.m.

The center will begin offering patient appointments and programs March 29 in the AtlantiCare LifeCenter, Building 200, Suite 224, 2500 English Creek Avenue, Egg Harbor Township. It will provide diagnosis, treatment, education and support services. Hours will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The multidisciplinary program will include the services of Program Medical Director and endocrinologist Randi Tomasulo as well as registered nurses and registered dieticians who are certified diabetes educators. The program includes AtlantiCare TEAM Diabetes and gestational diabetes education classes. The program also links patients to support services.

“We are proud to bring the world leader in diabetes care and education to southeastern New Jersey,” said Katherine Schneider, M.D., Vice President, AtlantiCare Health Engagement. “Diabetes affects our local community at a rate that exceeds both state and national norms. If not properly treated, it can be life-threatening and debilitating. We look forward to working with the Joslin staff in Boston. Together we’ll elevate the level of care for patients with diabetes through our partnership with this international leader in diabetes treatment, research and education.”

“According to the ADA, 700,000 people in New Jersey have diabetes,” said Janice Murphy, Director, National Affiliated Programs at Joslin Diabetes Center. “We know that, statistically, a third of them don’t know they have the disease. We look forward to working with AtlantiCare to bring Joslin’s integrated, comprehensive care to people with diabetes and related conditions.”
