In addition to her service as a Joslin Trustee, Dr. Herman serves on the Board of Directors of Voluntis, a digital therapeutics company based in Paris, France and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Previously, she was a board member of The Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. She is the former chair of both the American Heart Association of Greater Boston and the Chief Medical Officers Leadership Council of the Association of Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), as well as former President of the Alliance for Health Care Improvement. Dr Herman is a Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical School and She is an annual guest lecturer at the Harvard School of Public Health.
 
Until July 2013, Roberta Herman, MD was the Chief Operating Officer for Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, one of New England’s largest non-profit managed health care organizations, providing care and coverage to over one million members throughout Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire.
 
As Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Herman was responsible for the day-to-day operations of Harvard Pilgrim, including sales, marketing, account and member services, product development, the provider network and medical management. She also oversaw Harvard Pilgrim’s emerging markets (New Hampshire, Maine and Central Massachusetts), Harvard Pilgrim’s Alliance relationship with United Health Care and the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (Research) Institute. The CEO’s partner in developing the company’s multi-year plan, Dr. Herman was also responsible for the implementation of all strategic initiatives, including the final stages of a five-year IT environment and platform conversion.
 
Before becoming COO, Dr. Herman served as Chief Medical Officer and led all of Harvard Pilgrim's clinical departments, including health promotion, disease management, pharmacy services, behavioral health, and quality and utilization programs. She was responsible for creating and implementing a groundbreaking Pay for Performance Program with Partners HealthCare as well as a first-to-market predictive modeling program. Under Dr. Herman’s leadership, Harvard Pilgrim was rated the #1 private health plan in America - a distinction it has maintained for ten consecutive years,* according to an annual ranking of the nation’s best health plans by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).**
 
Previously, Dr. Herman served as a primary care internist and Chief of Internal Medicine at Harvard Community Health Plan’s Cambridge Center. While there, she oversaw implementation of a team-based model of care and the Center’s first electronic medical record system. 
 
Dr. Herman graduated from McGill University Medical School (Montreal, Canada). She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Royal Victoria Hospital (Montreal, Canada) and received a Masters equivalent degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from McGill University while doing a fellowship year in Community Medicine.
