Equitable Diabetes Care
More than 100 million adults in the U.S. have diabetes or pre-diabetes. But, the rates of people diagnosed vary based on race and ethnicity. For example, American Indians/Alaska Natives make up 15.1% of the population with diabetes. Non-Hispanic blacks make up 12.7%, and Hispanics make up 12.1% of the population with diabetes. This compares to Asians (8%) and non-Hispanic whites (7.4%).1
Diabetes is more common among certain races and ethnicities than in others. And, this disparity increases with age, particularly after age 45. Being overweight or obese is another major risk factor, particularly if the extra weight is around the waist.
The team at Joslin Diabetes Center is committed to helping all people, regardless of their culture, race, or ethnicity, access high quality care for diabetes.
Multicultural Care
We offer two multicultural clinics - a Latino Clinic and Asian American Clinic. These clinics are staffed by bilingual healthcare providers who understand how the condition uniquely impacts Latinos and Asian Americans.
