Part I: The Basics of Managing Diabetes
This introductory program offers basic education in diabetes self-management for people with type 2 diabetes. It focuses on diabetes treatment options, risk reduction, blood glucose monitoring, healthy eating, physical activity, medications and strategies for addressing psychosocial issues and concerns. It has been designed to match the flow and content of the First Steps Booklet (but it can stand alone without the companion booklet).

First Steps Flipchart II: Part 2 ā€“ Nutrition and Activity Part 3: Medicines, Monitoring and Reducing Risks

Part 2: Nutrition and Activity
This program provides more in-depth information and skills training on lifestyle aspects of diabetes self-management: meal planning and physical activity, focusing on common misconceptions, benefits of healthy eating and activity, how foods affect blood glucose and how to safely begin an activity program. Emphasis is placed on meeting with a registered dietitian for an individualized meal plan.

Part 3: Medicines, Monitoring and Reducing Risks
This program addresses issues surrounding taking diabetes medicines, the ins and outs of blood glucose monitoring and what the numbers mean, and steps to lower the risk of developing diabetes complications or preventing complications from worsening. A strong emphasis is placed on knowing diabetes numbers and the role they play in risk reduction.

Leader's Guide is also included.
