Camp Corner

"When I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 12, I was scared and didn’t know what to expect with my new life. Camp Joslin really helped me understand diabetes in a fun and encouraging environment. Our counselors taught us about nutrition, food, and how to keep our bodies healthy. We played fun games and I met kids just like me from all around the world, kids who understood my new life, my feelings and really cared. I became happier, more confident, independent and responsible. I had a blast at Camp Joslin, it’s a place where I can be me.”

-Kevin, age 12

The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust generously donated camperships to the Barton Center this summer which allowed some children with type 1 diabetes the opportunity to attend Camp Barton/Joslin for the first time. Lillian, age 8 and recipient of one of these camperships, loved her time at Barton Camp: “I finally found my true home!”

On August 31, 2010, The Elliott P Joslin Camp, (aka EPJ or Camp Joslin) was purchased by the Barton Center for Diabetes Education. “For almost 70 years, Camp Joslin has provided a highly rewarding experience for children with diabetes, who leave camp with memories of fun times with new friends and with a better understanding of diabetes,” said Kenneth Quickel, Jr., MD, former Joslin President and CEO. “The Barton Center has done a superb job running Camp Joslin for the past two years and we are confident that, under Barton’s ownership, the camp will become even more successful in the coming years.”
