Many congratulations to our own Dr. Lloyd P. Aiello, who is the 2020 recipient of the prestigious Friedenwald Award from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Inc. (ARVO).

Dr. Aiello is Director of The Beetham Eye Institute at Joslin Diabetes Center, Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, Vice Chair Harvard Department of Ophthalmology for Centers of Excellence, and founding chair of the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network. Dr. Aiello’s contributions to understanding mechanisms underlying diabetic retinopathy, development of novel therapeutics such as VEGF and plasma kallikrein inhibitors, clinical trial design and implementation, telemedicine initiatives and novel retinal imaging modalities have had a global influence on the evaluation and care of diabetic eye disease.

According to ARVO's website, the Friedenwald Award was established in 1957 as a memorial to Dr. Jonas S. Friedenwald, a distinguished researcher whose contributions encompassed the entire field of ophthalmic investigations. His pioneer studies on the pathogenesis of glaucoma, corneal wound healing and diseases of the retina laid the groundwork for future generations of investigators. This award honors outstanding research in the basic or clinical sciences as applied to ophthalmology.

As part of this honor, Dr. Aiello will present the Friedenwald Award Lecture at ARVO's Annual Meeting in May.
