She is board certified both in geriatric medicine, and endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism. Dr. Munshi practices geriatric medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and has developed and directs the geriatric diabetes program at the Joslin Diabetes Center. This unique clinical program considers clinical, functional, and psychosocial barriers faced by older adults with diabetes, before formulating individualized treatment strategies.

Dr. Munshi has published extensively in the field of geriatric diabetes. She has participated in writing national and international guidelines for managing diabetes in older population and have co-authored textbooks on the subject. Her latest book is titled Aging Well with Diabetes: A 10-point Action Plan for Older Adults. She is the founding president of the International Geriatric Diabetes Society.

Research Interests

Over the past 25 years, Dr. Munshi has developed and directed the unique Geriatric Diabetes Program at the Joslin Diabetes Center to improve care of older adults with diabetes. The primary focus of Dr. Munshi’ s clinical research is to identify challenges faced by older individuals with diabetes, to develop strategies to overcome these barriers, and to improve clinical and functional outcomes, including quality of life.

One of the important areas for her investigation has been on the risks and poor outcomes of hypoglycemia in aging population. Her research team has performed several studies using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to detect unrecognized hypoglycemia in older population and improving the frequency of hypoglycemia by simplifying treatment regimen. This study has resulted in development of “reverse algorithm” that can be used by clinicians to de-intensify complex insulin regimen in frail older adults. This algorithm is now adapted as the “standard of care” by the American Diabetes Association and is published in the Medical Standard of Care for management of diabetes.

Recent focus of her team is to assess the use of technology to improve diabetes care and quality of life in older adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Her studies have focused on improving care of older adults with Type 1 diabetes and developing unique simplification of strategies with use of technology in this complex patient population. She has also performed studies to improve diabetes care in long-term care facilities, leading the position statement by the American Diabetes Association in this area. She founded the International Geriatric Diabetes Society in 2019, to improve research, education, and clinical care for older adults living with diabetes.
